CEPA helps CRU to provide a balanced framework that enables necessary long-term investment in Ireland’s electricity infrastructure
The Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU), Ireland’s independent energy and water regulator has today published its Final Determinations for the next electricity networks price controls, Price Review Six (PR6) which will run from January 2026 to December 2030. CEPA has been providing technical and economic consultancy support to CRU across all key workstreams, including:
- regulatory framework design;
- cost assessment and benchmarking;
- ongoing efficiency and real price effects;
- cost of capital and financeability;
- customer bill impact analysis; and
- stakeholder engagement and project management.
We are delighted to have had the opportunity to continue working with the CRU on what is an incredibly important price review for Ireland in terms of facilitating decarbonisation ambitions, supporting economic growth, increasing resilience and security of supply, all while protecting customers at a time when households face significant financial pressures.
The PR6 decision allows access to an initial €13.8bn of funding to provide increased network capacity and support connection of a range of cleaner energy technologies such as microgeneration, electric vehicles and heat pumps by 2030. The investment package will also unlock over 22,000MVA of additional capacity and facilitate delivery of more than 5GW of offshore wind by 2030.
Commenting on the project, Fraser Glen, CEPA’s Project Manager for this work, said: “Supporting the CRU on PR6 over the past two years has been a challenging but highly rewarding experience, reflecting the scale and complexity of the Price Review and the pressures currently facing the Irish electricity system as it decarbonises. Working closely with the CRU, and key stakeholders, the CEPA team has helped deliver this significant piece of work, and achieve what we think is a robust and balanced outcome for Irish electricity consumers.”
